Why do we think we need to be perfect? Logically, we all know that perfection isn’t possible and yet we’re still really hard on ourselves when we fall short.
Why can’t we just be perfectly flawed, each uniquely perfect in our own beautiful ways?
I think it has a lot to do with media (perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect wardrobe), and maybe the role that religious dogma has historically played in our lives (“cleanliness is next to godliness”). But it’s not realistic, and can even be damaging if we’re not careful.
We all know there is no such thing as perfection and somehow in the past decade or so, it’s gone so far as to become a buzzword in both our personal and professional lives.
Me: “Let’s meet at 3pm on Thursday.”
Them: Perfect! See you then
It’s a beautiful word, I admit. I like hearing it. And I say it all the time too.
Let’s keep saying it but I suggest we tweak the definition. If not officially, then unofficially in our own minds.
So, from now on, when I say “perfect,” please know I mean, you’re perfectly you in your own uniquely perfect way.
